MDI Recently Held Our First Luncheon Event in December 2018
In mid December MDI Ventures held our very first closed doors luncheon event where we invited a series of startup investors from venture capital firms, private equity firms and angel investors to share each of our insights and opinions regarding the local tech industry.
Our attendees included partners from Mahanusa Capital, Convergence Ventures, Venturra Capital and more and discussed topics such as the lack of regulatory incentives to set up a venture capital firm in Indonesia. How this can affect the local tech industry, in both short and long term, and how it forces startups to seek foreign investments, thus relinquishing equity control to external parties (who do not always have interests local economy’s well being).
During our lunch the assembly of investors had also come to a common conclusions regarding a crucial point that sways them to invest in a company. That crucial point is a founder’s reputation. In some cases our assembly of investors shared that they have declined investment opportunities, in companies that have strong technological background, as they believe in the founders reputation and ethics.
A common trend that our gathering has also identified is that there seems to be a crunch in the local seed stage funding sector, not from the capital side but, from the startup sides. Our seed stage investors has mentioned that they have faced a difficult time in finding good quality startups to invest in this year, mainly seeing more copycat companies or crazy blockchain ideas.
In 2019 we hope to create more luncheon events to discuss a wider array of topics regarding our flourishing tech industry.
If you had missed out on our last event then we hope to see you at our next one.
